Perpendicular

Electronica fused jazz that builds off a large brass section tension throughout this 6-minute plus opus following Acetone and morphs into Parallel directly after.

Parallel

The 'double' is completed accompanying Perpendicular. As the second track on Statstically Significant, it parallels Perpendicular's BPM + C minor scale, but pushes further into electronica land. Listen to both back-to-back for the full experience.

Mindful Statistics

Gun Violence

According to Kaiser Family Foundation, an independent source of health policy research:

“During the pandemic, firearm-related deaths increased among children, with seven children per day dying by firearm in 2021. From 2011 to 2021, nearly 18,500 children ages 17 and younger died by firearm. During this period, firearm death rates gradually rose until 2017, then slowed through 2019, before sharply rising in the first two years of the pandemic (Figure 1). From 2019 to 2021, the firearm death rate among children increased by 50% (from 2.4 to 3.6 per 100,000). This translates to seven children per day dying by firearm in 2021. Throughout the past decade, assaults have accounted for at least half of all youth firearm deaths while suicides by firearm have accounted for at least three in ten of these deaths. The spike in youth firearm deaths during the pandemic have primarily been driven by gun assaults. Firearm-related injuries among children have also increased in recent years – from 9.9 per 100,000 in 2010 to 15.5 per 100,000 in 2020 (the latest firearm injury data available).” source

Social Justice

According to the Prison Policy Initiative, by the year 2019, the criminal justice system in America detained an extensive number of individuals, with nearly 2.3 million people being held across various types of facilities. These include 1,719 state prisons, 109 federal prisons, 1,772 juvenile correctional facilities, 3,163 local jails, and 80 ‘Indian Country’ jails. Additionally, individuals were also held in military prisons, immigration detention facilities, civil commitment centers, state psychiatric hospitals, and prisons located in U.S. territories. This vast array of institutions reflects the comprehensive scope of the American criminal justice system’s reach and impact.

And according to World Prison Brief, “The U.S. has almost 5% of the world’s population but 22% of its prison population.”  The USA has a total of 1,767,200 incarcerated individuals, and China has 1,690,000.  The United States of America’s area is 2% less than China’s (approx. 9,596,960 sq km : 9,833,517 sq km) yet has ~1.1 billion less in population.

Basketball

David Robinson, aka ‘The Admiral,’ of the San Antonio Spurs was the last player record a quadruple-double, a statistically improbable feat scoring 34 points – dishing 10 assists – grabbing 10 rebounds – and racking up 10 blocks in a win against the Detroit Pistons on February 17th, 1994. The three other players to achieve this in NBA history are Hakeem ‘The Dream’ Olajuwon, Nate Thurman, and Alvin Robertson.

Music

Bernard Purdie, one of the greatest drummers of all-time, has to be one of the most recorded musicians in history.

Drum Magazine describes the following: Consider, for instance, the rarity of finding drummers akin to Ringo who have had the privilege of recording with the Beatles without facing legal consequences. Furthermore, even if we solely acknowledge his remarkable contributions through his profound funk drumming displayed in iconic pieces by James Brown and Aretha Franklin, it would suffice to secure him a place in the annals of history. Yet, these instances merely scratch the surface of an exceptional, multifaceted career in studio drumming. This illustrious journey encompasses an astonishing range of 20,000 to 30,000 sessions, encompassing the recording of 4,000 albums, and spanning a remarkable duration of three decades.
